Don’t fidget

After several months of roughly 300 mg of caffeine a day, I took Labor Day to reset. Part of that was 30 minutes in the sauna: 200°F of deliberate discomfort.

Normally, if it’s quiet, I play a private game against the other sauna-goers: who can fidget less, who can breathe quieter, who can hold still longer. It’s a test of grit.

Today I lost.

The man across from me barely moved. His breathing was steady. His demeanor was calm. While I shifted, he simply sat. Only moving twice to lift his water bottle to quench his thirst, then returning to stillness.

He did not win our fictitious game by resisting the 200°F, but existing within it. Presence turns discomfort into a thing you can hold, and the body no longer needs to fidget. Breath, wood, sweat, air. Repeat.

He did not overpower the discomfort. He met it, fully, and stayed still.
